S Twist Wool
rustic Irish yarn, sheep to skein, from S Twist Wool in County Tipperary
Vibrant, hardy, and unapologetically rustic, S Twist Wool is a new, and much anticipated, sheep to skein yarn from Co. Tipperary.
In the course of designing the Laitís collection for S Twist Wool, I have absolutely fallen in love with this yarn (see here for a detailed review). I am pleased to now make both the patterns and the yarn available here in the shop.
About the Patterns
When I think of winter in Ireland, I think of the slanted northern light casting its long, enchanted shadows. It was this that inspired the cabled motifs of the Laitís collection. The Laitís sweater is an elegant funnel neck pullover knitted seamlessly from the top down with subtle A-line shaping. The Laitís hat is a classic unisex beanie that makes for a quick and satisfying single-skein project. The patterns are available individually, and in kits, bundled together with generous amounts of S Twist Wool yarn. Click on the product names for more details.
About the Yarn
Sourced from mixed local mountain fleeces, S Twist Overdyed Mountain Grey is a 2-ply aran weight yarn, yielding 150m per 100g skein.
The yarn is mill spun, then overdyed by hand, resulting in a collection of rich, captivating colours.
As pictured left to right, the colours are: Natural White, Natural Grey, Black n' Amber, Juniper, Blueberry, Purple, Cherry, and Tiger. (For images of individual skeins and further details, click on the product name!)
The S Twist Wool is hardy and rustic. It is not meant to be worn next to skin, but is perfect for outdoor wear in damp and chilly weather, over a base layer. It is especially good at keeping out moisture, and is water resistant in mild to moderate rain for up to an hour.
The yarn is gorgeously spun and not overly dense, resulting in good meterage and beautifully draping fabric. Perfect for knitting intricate cables and plain stockinette alike, it is also well suited to colourwork.
